Today was a really long, but extremely cool and interesting day at school. Well, not actually at school, since we took a field trip to see some forges and foundries in and near Tallinn. The most impressive one was at the BLRT (Baltic Ship Repair ....place :) ) where they had one of the largest forges in one building and another one was where they were casting iron.

At the foundry

At the forge

What can I say, I just LOVE fire and anything to do with it :D
After returning to school I decided to make the most of my day and stay to work few more hours. Hahaa, as usual, those "few" hours turned into a whole afternoon and I ended up leaving around 8om.
But, here is what I have to show for that time.

Here's a ring that I've been itching to try to make for a while, but had no clue on how to actually do it. When I started today, I was just as clueless, but as you can see, figured it out in the process. That is also why I started with copper instead of moving right to silver. And I'm glad that I did. This ring turned out kinda OK, but it is mainly a very good example of mistakes and things to avoid. So my next one's gonna be better and of silver. I actually started working on the silver one this evening, but as usual, messed up the soldering and had to start all over again, which led to frustration, which in turn let to pain and bleeding... literally :D

The second picture is of a bookmark, that I found the idea for online last night and couldn't wait to try out. Again, a perfect example of what tho do different the next time.

Oh, and btw, today I noticed a little round number at the bottom of my blog - 10,000 visits!!! Not new ones only though, but all new and returning ones. So congrads to me, yay!

Pretty green.... and blue...

Another custom order got finished today. When making the necklace, I discovered that I must had been inspired by MdmB, because it is awfully similar to the style she's been working with lately. Well.... :D All I can say is that I admire her ideas and work, as it's quite obvious.
I made most of the chain on the necklace myself and it is the first time that I tried that. Hand made chains I've seen in the past have appeared quite clumsy to me so I never bothered trying to make it myself until yesterday, when I got the idea when working on another piece (which I can't wait to show you as soon as it's finished!!!). I'm quite happy with the way it turned out. I have second thoughts about the organza ribbon that I used with it though. I love the color that it brings to the whole piece but it seems to get in the way of the chain falling unhindered. We'll see...

Suurema osa kee ketist meisterdasin ise, igale asjale ole esimene kord. Isevalmistatud ketid on mulle alati tundunud kuidagi kohmakad, seetõttu pole varem olnud endal huvi proovida, kuid selle keti jaoks tuli mulle idee ühe teise ettevõtmise kallal pusides (ei jõua ära oodata, et teile näidata, kui valmis saab!!!)
Ma olen üsna rahul sellega, kuidas see välja kukkus.

Spacey Princess Cuff

On Monday Lucy, MdmB and I had another get-together at Viru, to attempt making a jewelry project together from a Beadwork magazine special edition. None of us had all the supplies needed for this cuff, so we all just brought what we had and then shared. The bracelet is made using memory wire, which I haven't used much in the past. Although we followed the instructions pretty closely, all of our pieces ended up looking a little different. Both Lucy and MdmB finished theirs at our outing, but I was kinda slow to complete mine, so I finished it later that evening at home. Instead of the colored wire I used plain copper wire in mine, which I later oxidized to match the other copper beads in the piece.

My copper and glass cuff

Ethnic Ring

I finally decided to try a tutorial by Iza Malczyk that I had bought months ago already. I started off with silver plated copper wire, but after tarnishing and polishing it turned into lovely copper tone. I'm not completely happy with how it turned out, but I never am. The next one will be better. It's a neat design and I'm planning on mixing different metals in the next ring. Iza makes some of the most amazing jewelry! What a creativity and class!! Check it out and you'll see.

Ma viimaks otsustasin proovida järgi Iza Malczyk'i õpetuse, mille juba kuid tagasi olin ostnud.

Jewelry Competition

I recently participated in a jewelry competition on Isetegija.net. I entered at the last minute, sending my picture in 30minutes before the deadline. There's nothing like pushing it to the last minute and rushing to get it in!! Right! :D
It was actually not my intention to enter at all, since I've been focused on something else rather major in my life recently, but those two things found a way to come together for the birth of this sunny piece of ocean floor. It did bring me success in both arenas; bringing me the first place in the competition. The competition was very interesting and offered something for every taste. Among my personal favorites was also the second place winner MdmB's necklace Atlantis, in which I love both the colors and style.

Mul ei olnud tegelikult plaanis osa võtta, kuna mul on viimasel ajal olnud tähelepanu millegi teise juures, kuid kuidagi leidsid need kaks asja ühise hetke.

Crazy Horse Days!!!

Juba mõned päevad tagasi sai valmis kulon, mis on inspireeritud jällegi sellest Eni Okeni sõrmusest, mida mõned nädalat tagasi näha sai. Kiviks on sellise lõbusa nimega poolvääriskivi Crazy Horse Stone (hullu hobuse kivi).

I finished this pendant few days ago already, inspired by the Eni Oken freeform ring, that I showed some weeks ago. For the stone I used semi-precious stone called Crazy Horse Stone :D. It doesn't seem to be too highly valued, but I was attracted to its pink color. Antiqued copper matches the stone maybe even too well, not showing the stone enough, but I quite like it with this piece. I didn't put much effort into the necklace, because the simpler solution in the face of this chain seemed to fit this pendant better.
Oh how I long for the spring to be here with the sun and more daylight!!

She sells seashells by the seashore...

She sells seashells by the seashore...

She sells seashells by the seashore... If this doesn't twist your tongue then I don't know what will... in any case it's a lot of fun!
But the "Seashells" above twisted my fingers enough. I haven't made anything wrapped that fine for a while, so a little exercise was good for me. I used copper wire (0,8 and 0,4) and 4 mm swarovskis. Earrings are actually smaller in real life than they might appear on the photo, the diameter of the shell is 1,5 cm and the length of the whole piece is 2,5 cm. Their weight is also surprisingly light considering the amount of wire, that usually adds quite a bit of weight to wrapped pieces such as these. You might have noticed that I have finally picked a logo, which you can see in the bottom right corner of the photo and also on the jewelry display card. For the logo I must thank my good friend Ain Vares at logolife.com who was very patient with me.

Be my Valentine!

Minu blogi nimi ei peaks olema 'Jewelry by Janalill' vaid 'Earrings by Janalill', sest minu viimase paari kuu töid vaadates nagu muud polekski teinud.

Kivideks on unakiit, mida sai tellitud südamekujuliste helmestena. Pilti ülesse riputades jäid mulle silma samades toonides randmesoojendajad, milledega sain hakkama paar kuud tagasi. Näitan ka neid, siis saate ise otsustada. Olen nädalakese ära võõral maal, nii et mõnda aega te minust ei kuule, kuid tagasi tulles on mul teile ehk midagi muud näidata.

I might have been a little mistaken when I predicted that my love for copper would pass when the sterling arrived. Silver is nice and I personally prefer to wear silver myself, but when I start making jewelry, I find copper in my hands time and time again. This time I added some semi-precious stones to copper, which I have mainly in green colors. Now this seems to contradict my previous posting, where I said that green is not one of my preferred colors. Well, the truth is that I do like green; I just don't wear it a lot. But since I have a lot of green jewelry stuff, I can only hope that there are many more other people who do wear green more often than I.

This new pair of earrings is completely hand crafted by me, meaning that I have finally learned how to make ear hooks, which in itself is fairly simple and quick. I only messed up one hook before making this pair. For stones I have used unakite, which came as heart-shaped beads. I very much dislike all kinds of special shaped beads, such as star, heart, moon, flower, etc. so imagine my surprise when I found them in my package. I must have been distracted by its marvelous color, which is not displayed very well in the given photograph. When uploading this picture I noticed a pair of wrist warmers, which I knit a few months ago. I will show you the picture of them too, so you can decide for yourself, whether they match or not. I will be out of the country for a week, so you probably won't hear from me in a while, but when I return, I might have something else to show.

Pink beauties

Mulle meeldib teine tumedam variant rohkem, sest roosad helmed tulevad tumedama metalli taustal rohkem esile.

I promised to show something else that I made last weekend. Hammered oxidized copper wrapped in glass beads. I like the second look better, because the light beads seem to stand out more with the darker metal.

After a long weekend I'm finally able to show you a whole army of new pieces. I haven't made rings before, but remembered seeing some different designs when browsing other masters' works, and tried to make a few of them the best I could. I wasted a lot of wire while practicing, but this is the only way to learn. Some of the pieces are oxidized and you can see the before and after pictures. Along with the rings I made something else... which I will show you tomorrow.
If anyone is reading this blog in English, please give me some feedback, so I know that someone is actually reading this and I'm not just wasting my time and brains... :)

Carrot party!!!

Minu vaseajastu on täies hiilguses kuid mitte enam kauaks!

Check back for English later. Thanks!

Garnet Chandelier earrings

I have finally finished a pair of earrings to match the shell pendant I wrote about in an earlier posting. I think I forgot to mention the materials used for that set. For wrapping I used 0,4 mm (26 gauge) copper wire, and 0,6 mm (22 gauge) for the earrings and 0,8mm (20 gauge) for the pendant frame. I bought the stones from a local market under the name of “garnet”, and they have the look of garnet, although I can’t be quite sure.
I don’t get tired of saying how much I like copper! It is so moldable, but yet sturdy and the different color variations are so exciting. Rinsing it with the Cillit cleaner gives it a bright pink and shiny color, and it also enhances the luster on glass beads, although the effect on the wire doesn’t last very long, since copper is very sensitive to humidity and other variables. Those earrings are yet to be oxidized to match the pendant in color.

In the beginning....

Enne (before)

Pärast (after)
Hello everyone!

After an exhausting battle with my computer and technology I have finally succeeded in setting up my blog. It really isn’t all that hard, but I’ve noticed that I just like doing things the impossible or almost impossible way.

In any case, here it is. In this first entry I’m proud to present my first bigger wire wrapping project (first picture).
Also, a few nights before that I finished my first actual order which will soon be accompanied by a pair of matching earrings (as soon as my supply of wire is restocked). On this piece I also experimented with the egg oxidizing method, which turned out quite OK. I have posted before and after shots to display the results better.
